Bintou Bojang, activist from the IWS, went to West Africa to continue her advocacy against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Bintou met with teenage girls as well as circumsicers during a workshop where she spoke about resistance and movements such as „Drop the Knife“. In Bintou’s own words: “some parents bring their daughters to the circumciser for Infibulation, one of the types of FGM, which involves narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal. The seal is formed by cutting and repositioning the inner, or outer, labia, with or without removal of the clitoris. The remaining skin is sewn or sealed together leaving a tiny hole for menstrual blood and urine. Sometimes this practice is asked by a husband who wants his girl to have an extra seal on her vagina. Oh Africa! Women and girls are going through hell in the hands of some selfish men! This madness must stop! There are so many challenges. A single one challenge is how to keep girls in the school as the dropout is around 90% and a directly consequence of what FGM represent for these girls’s lives. We still have a long way to go and I call on a global concern to end FGM!”
TOGETHER WE CAN STOP ALL FORMS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS. LET’S HELP BINTOU TO ACHIEVE HER DREAMS THROUGH SENSITIZATION.
